A 70 MILLION-YEAR-OLD FOSSIL WAS RECENTLY DISCOVERED IN NEW VALLEY
At the Kharga Oasis, in the province of New Valley, researchers from Cairo University and New Valley University discovered the bones of a new species of prehistoric turtle. The whole shell of a side-neck turtle from the Late Cretacious period was recognised as the 70 million year old fossil, according to a study that was just just published in Diversity, a peer-reviewed scientific magazine.
The study, which was written by researchers Mohamed AbdelGawad of Cairo University, Adán Pérez-Garca of Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia in Madrid, Spain, Ren Hirayama of Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan, and Sara Mohesn, Abdel-Aziz Tantawy, and Gebely Abu El-Kheir of New Valley University, contends that the fossil fills in an evolutionary gap
The fossil was named Khargachelys caironensis because it was the first of its kind to be found and because it was found in the Kharga Oasis.
