A TEMPORARY EXHIBITION IS OPENED AT BARON EMPAIN PALACE BY QUEEN MATILDE OF BELGIUM
The Baron Empain Palace in Heliopolis hosted a temporary exhibition, which was inaugurated by Queen Mathilde of Belgium and Crown Princess Elizabeth alongside Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Ahmed Issa, and the Belgian Ambassador to Egypt, François Cornet.
The exhibit, “1923-2023: Queen Elisabeth of Belgium in Egypt,” marks the 100th anniversary of the trip to Egypt made by Queen Elisabeth of the Belgians and her son, Crown Prince Leopold.
The show includes a selection of images, videos, and paintings that emphasise the close ties between Egypt and Belgium, with a particular emphasis on Queen Elisabeth’s travels between 1923 and 1930, when she helped spread the study of Egyptology in the West.
Images of the Queen touring other monuments while on a Nile cruise and attending the ceremonial inauguration of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber in 1923 can be seen in the exhibition. The exhibition also depicts King Albert and Queen Elisabeth’s trip to Egypt in 1930, when the Queen went on guided tours of ancient sites with archaeologist Jean Capart.
