AT COP27, EGYPT AND MOROCCO ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF THEIR JOINT SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION PLANS

At COP27, Egypt and Morocco announces the launch of their joint sustainability and environmental protection plans

A draught Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development H.E. Dr. Leila Benali and Egypt’s Minister of the Environment H.E. Dr. Yasmine Fouad (@yasmine.fouad.egypt) on the sidelines of COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh.

The alliance is expected to align the interests of the two North African nations in the areas of environmental preservation and sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on the “Waste 50 Initiative.”

The “Waste 50 Initiative” emphasises the need for immediate climate action and results by the year 2050 through an institutional and legislative framework for the environment and sustainable development, environmental impact assessment of projects, adaptation and mitigation of climate changes, development of renewable energies, integrated management of coastal areas and combating marine pollution, management of transboundary hazardous and solid waste, the administration of protected areas, the preservation of biodiversity, and the restoration of ecosystems.

According to the Minister of Environment, H.E. Dr. Yasmine Fouad ( @yasmine.fouad.egypt ), the relationship is a part of Egypt’s ambition for cooperation with Arab nations.
