BELGIUM’S QUEEN MATHILDE TO VISIT EGYPT THIS MARCH

Between March 14 and March 16, Egypt will host a working visit by Queen Mathilde of Belgium and Crown Princess Elisabeth.

The visit, according to a statement from the Royal Palace of Belgium, is in honour of Queen Elisabeth, who ruled Belgium from 1909 to 1934 and promoted Egyptology both at home and abroad throughout her reign.

Together with her son, Crown Prince Léopold, Queen Elisabeth visited the recently discovered tomb of Tutankhamun in 1923. The Association Égyptologique Reine Élisabeth was established in 1925 by Jean Capart, a pioneer in Belgian Egyptology, shortly after this visit. Since 1937, the foundation has consistently worked on archaeological projects in El Kab, Upper Egypt.
Queen Mathilde and Crown Princess Elisabeth will inaugurate an exhibition in Cairo honouring Queen Elisabeth and Belgian Egyptologists, following in her footsteps. Along with visiting several locations in and around Luxor, the Queen and Crown Princess will also go to Tutankhamun’s tomb.
