Egypt has been named the top African nation with the fastest fixed broadband internet speed
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on October 10th, Egypt has been named the top African nation with the fastest fixed broadband internet speed by the international broadband speed test Ookla.
In the continent’s first and second quarters of 2022, Egypt held the top spot.
This results from the ministry’s efforts to build the internet infrastructure, which helped to increase the average broadband speed from 6.5 megabytes per second in 2019 to 46 megabytes per second.

It’s important to note that Egypt ranked 40th on the list in 2010
Amr Talaat, Egypt’s communications minister, said in a statement about the honour that the country’s fixed internet’s average speed has doubled around three times in three years
Talaat also emphasised that, as of 2019, the government had committed EGP 40 billion in the project’s initial phase, which intended to increase the effectiveness of the internet.
With investments estimated at EGP 20 billion, the second phase of the project is currently being carried out to extend the optical fibres in cities, Talaat stated.
Furthermore, another project aims to extend optical fibers in more than 4,500 villages under the Decent Life initiative is being implemented with EGP 25 billion in investments, he added, noting that this project targets boosting the internet efficiency in 3.5 million houses
