EGYPT’S RED SEA FISHING HAS BEEN BANNED UNTIL OCTOBER

Written by The Dose Team

From May 2 to October 4, 2023, most forms of fishing are prohibited in the Red Sea, Suez Gulf, and Gulf of Aqaba.

The ruling also applies to other stretches of Egypt’s Red Sea coastline outside the Suez Gulf, where certain kinds of fishing will be prohibited for specific amounts of time. This will include restrictions on hook-fishing, among other things, from June 1 to July 31. There will also be bans on traction fishing from June 1 to September 10 and on net fishing from May 2 to September 4.

There will be several times when controlled fishing is permitted. Between May 15 and September 15, traction fishing will not be prohibited; however, between June 1 and September 15, motorised net fishing will be permitted. The same rules apply to hook-fishing from May 15 to the beginning of August as they do to net fishing from June 1 to September 15.

Fish Wealth Authority representatives issued a warning that violators would face confiscation of their fishing equipment and a six-month suspension of their boat licence.
