EUR 41 MILLION TO UPGRADE ELECTRICITY GENERATORS OF ASWAN’S HIGH DAM

The KfW Development Bank has contributed EUR 41 million to a repair project for the hydropower plant at the Aswan High Dam, according to an announcement made by the German ambassador to Cairo, Frank Hartmann.

The dam is in charge of supplying 50% of Egypt’s energy needs. Its existing generators have existed since 1960, however, prompting recent calls for its renewal. The second phase of the rehabilitation project received a EUR 26 million allocation from the KfW Development Bank in April 2022.

In a recent press release, the ambassador noted that cooperation between Egypt and Germany is essential for progress in a variety of areas, including energy, agriculture, women’s empowerment, and development. By 2028, it is anticipated that all work on the dam project would be finished.
