Mayar Sherif, the reigning Egyptian tennis champion, became the first Egyptian to ever make it to a 1,000-point Masters competition as she advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Madrid Open Tennis competition. Elise Mertens of Belgium was defeated by Sherif in a match that lasted over three hours, earning Sherif a place among the eight finals competing in the international competition.
In the 32nd round of the women’s singles competition, Sherif upset Caroline Harishia, the number five player in the world.
At 3 PM today, Cairo time, Sherif will face off against Arina Sabalenka, the second-ranked player in the world. Sabalenka defeated Mira Andreeva of Russia in two sets to earn a matchup with Sherif in the quarterfinals.
