TANZANIA OPENS THE EGYPTIAN-TANZANIAN MEGAPROJECT JULIUS NYERERE HYDROPOWER PLANT AND DAM
Tanzania’s megaproject, the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant and Dam (JNHPP), a joint Egyptian-Tanzanian effort, has now received official approval. Egyptian firms Arab Contractors Company and El-Sewedy Electric, along with more than 2,500 Egyptian and Tanzanian engineers and employees, contributed to the project’s completion in October 2022.
The man-made reservoir, which cost USD 3 billion and covered an area of 158,000 square kilometres with a storage capacity of 34 billion cubic metres, a length of 1,025 metres, and a water level of 130 metres, is one of the largest development projects in Africa. The JNHPP is anticipated to generate 2,115 megawatts and 5,920 GWh of electricity each year.
The undertaking is a component of Egypt’s national strategy to assist sustainable development projects in Africa, and to engage in ongoing collaborations between Nile basin countries.
