Many Egyptian handicraft traditions are dispersed throughout its various cities, each with its own distinctive identity and techniques, and local women are preserving their craftsmanship from their homes one piece at a time. Examples include traditional Siwan embroidery and hand-tanned leather in Shalateen. By selling footwear made by skilled artisans from Siwa and Shalateen, the local brand Bulga—named after the ‘bulgha’—was established specifically to honour these historical traditions.
