Toshka South Valley Project is the world’s top sustainable development project for 2022
The Toshka South Valley Project in Egypt has been selected by the American engineering consultancy Engineering News-Record (ENR) as the world’s top sustainable development project for 2022.
The Toshka Project, which was started in 1997, was an ambitious endeavour to turn 500,000 acres of desert into farmland by creating a second Nile Valley. The project was placed on hold in 2005 despite receiving millions of dollars in investments because there were too many difficulties to overcome and no obvious solutions in sight. The Ministry of Agriculture had picked up the project once more in recent years.
The land is currently solely used for agricultural development; various crops have been identified and assigned to particular plots in order to achieve maximum results without the use of chemicals such as fungicides or insecticides. This agricultural project is completely eco-friendly since the air, water, and soil have all been filtered and untreated.
The initiative aims to move the indigenous population from Upper Egypt to the New Valley governorate in addition to revitalising the desert. The project aims to enable a higher standard of living, including improved air quality, land distribution, and employment opportunities, through this population relocation.
